Seasonal changes can call for a little altering in your daily makeup routine. The beauty of winterizing your makeup is that it can help get you in the spirit of winter months and revamp your entire look. Winter calls for bold hues that will brighten up even the coldest day.

Flawless Foundation

Although summer and the warmer months are great times for light, mineral-based foundations, your skin may need more hydration in the winter. With cold air outside and heaters indoors, your skin has to put up with a lot throughout these months.

You might feel tempted to go heavy-handed with your makeup to brighten a dull winter complexion, but you should really be doing the opposite. Ditch the heavy foundations and opt for a sheer tinted moisturizer.

The built-in hydrators in these products will help soothe dry winter skin, and the dewy finish will get some glow back in your game. When you use a sheer foundation formula, you can go a shade darker than your actual skin without looking fake — so you look just a little less pale.

Give it a boost with a foundation that deeply nourishes and hydrates your skin. Look for a one with a healthy dose of SPF of 30 or higher. Match the shade to the skin on your neck and around your cleavage instead of the skin on your face.

Your skin may also need a foundation that is a shade lighter because of being indoors more.

No More Puffy Eyes

With cold and flu season, puffy eyes are common. Don’t let puffy or dark circles underneath them stop you from presenting a bright, fresh face to the world on winter days. Simply apply a yellow-toned concealer under your eyes.

Blend in with a concealer brush or your ring finger. Go a shade lighter than your foundation to brighten your eyes and make shadows a thing of the past.

Brighten Up

A little bit of blush can go a long way when it comes to creating a healthy, bright complexion. Dab a bit of cream blush in a perky coral or pink shade on the apples of your cheeks for an instant perk-up remedy.

These moist formulas blend into dry skin more easily than powder. Fair-skinned beauties should stick to peach-toned blushes for the most natural look. Darker-skinned babes should opt for an oranger hue, which will help to play down any cold-induced blue-toned blotches.

Bronze

You don’t have to say goodbye to your bronzers all winter — but you do have to adjust your shade if you want to keep your skin looking natural.

Go a few shades lighter than you would in summer — ideally, just one shade darker than your natural skin tone. Brush it on with a fluffy brush on the highest points of the face that would naturally be kissed by the sun, such as your forehead, nose, and cheekbones.

Lips

Heavy red lipstick on top of chapped lips? Not a good look.

Press a hydrating stain or tinted balm into lips for a natural glow. Avoid matte lip formulas in winter. They’ll just look dry and dull.

Keep your lips looking spectacular all winter long by gently exfoliating with a toothbrush or washcloth before applying your lipstick. Switch out matte lipsticks for creamy ones during the winter so your lips can stay quenched.

Eyes

Cold winter air can take a toll on your eyes, especially if they are sensitive. Use an eye primer before applying eye shadow to help keep makeup intact. Winter is the perfect time for rich, jewel tones so pull out rich red and rose lipsticks.

Eye-watering wind, wet snow, coughs, and touches of the flu — eye makeup’s worst enemies love winter. Stick with waterproof mascara, and keep liner on the upper lash line only.
