If you spend more than a few seconds on your makeup in the morning, then you know how much a blotchy face of makeup can ruin your day.

Fortunately for foundation-lovers, there are steps you can take to rectify a blotchy face so that your skin stays smooth and flawless all day.

Exfoliate

Unless you’ve got severely dry or flaky skin, your mug can probably benefit from a good exfoliation to remove dead skin to prep it for later.

Choose a thick exfoliate and massage it into your face in circular motions to loosen and remove old skin that can cause blotchiness.

If you have sensitive skin, go for a creamy exfoliate rather than one packed with rough particles. Or, simply washing your face with a gentle cleanser and a washcloth can get rid of rough skin.

Moisturize

After you’ve gotten your skin clean, you’ll need to moisturize it to keep it smooth and hydrated and prevent your foundation from looking blotchy later.

Grab a moisturizer that matches your skin type — oily, dry, or combo — for the best results. Also, you’ll want to apply the moisturizer after you wash your face and it’s still damp to retain as much moisture as possible. Pat your moisturizer into your face.

Prime

Nothing will help your foundation to stay in place and look amazing like a good facial primer, which is formulated to keep your foundation on perfectly.

Choose a primer made for your skin type and massage a dollop into your face all over. Your skin should have a more even look to it, as the primer will help to fill in lines and other facial features that can cause your foundation to look blotchy.

Apply

Apply your foundation in thin layers, not one thick layer, since this can cause your makeup to look caked on. You’ll also find that it will look greasy and blotchy if you apply thick layers.

Use a foundation brush, swipe the product across your face in a T-shape and blend it outwards from there. If you need more coverage, apply another layer in the same way, though you should try to stick to one or one and a half layers for a natural look that won’t crease or look blotchy later.

Face powders can do more for you than just set your makeup. Whether you’ve got oily skin, blotchy skin or both – there are face powders out there that can help solve your skin dilemmas. Don’t pick up just any face powder for oily and blotchy skin – pick up one that’s recommended by a leading women’s magazine.

L’Oreal Paris True Match Super-Blendable Powder
This “Allure” Best of Beauty award-winning powder is super lightweight but covers blotchy skin like crazy. Plus, this one subdues shiny skin so even those with the greasiest T-zones will get their oil slick soaked up. There are 24 different shades to choose from so even the hardest-to-match skin tone should find its color.

Black Opal Invisible Oil Blocking Powder
Black Opal Invisible Oil Blocking Powder is specifically made for those with dark complexions. It won the “Allure” Best of Beauty award in 2009 because it helps mattify oily skin and even out darker skin tones. This is a loose powder so if you want more coverage, use a Kabuki brush – which has denser bristles, creating better coverage.

Laura Gellar Baked To-Go Balance n Brighten
This color correcting powder by Laura Gellar is recommended by “Redbook” magazine for balancing uneven complexions while giving skin a soft glow. It helps to even out skin tone, get rid of ruddiness in the skin and even brighten dull skin. Since the Laura Gellar Baked To-Go Balance n Brighten powder is also mineral-oil free, it helps mattify oily skin instead of adding to it.

Elizabeth Arden Pure Finish Mineral Powder Foundation SPF 20
This mineral powder makeup helps to perfect skin while reducing shine. Elizabeth Arden Pure Finish Mineral Powder — recommended by “Redbook” because it’s long lasting and easy-to-use — also protects skin from sun damage which can cause blotchy, uneven skin tone in the future. The coverage from this powder is buildable so the more you use, the more coverage you get.
