Nothing beats the way you feel when you are literally putting your best face forward.

Whether your skin is butter pecan, ebony, or somewhere in between, you know that nothing can compare to that beautiful glow when your skin is smooth and happy.

However, sometimes your gorgeous, even skin tone becomes marred by darker marks and discolorations that can be difficult to hide and sometimes may even be irritating or painful.

When this happens, you may feel like you will never like looking in the mirror again. Fortunately, there are some easy homemade remedies to get even skin for African Americans that will have you back in your glow in no time.

Lemon Juice Treatment

If your uneven skin tone is caused by melasma, a condition often associated with hormonal changes that create hyperpigmentation in the skin, then a simple lightening treatment to blend those dark spots back into your lighter skin tone may be the best way to go.

Apply freshly squeezed lemon juice to the areas of your skin that are darker than the rest using a cotton ball. Enjoy your lemony-fresh scent for 20 minutes before rinsing your face with cool water and moisturizing as usual.

You can do this as often as twice a day, but be sure to wear sunscreen when you go outside since lemon juice increases your skin’s sensitivity to the sun.

Homemade Remedies to Even Out Discoloration on Darker Skin Tones

Avocado Mask

If you are looking for something a little more luxurious, try a silky avocado face mask to even out your skin tone. Mash an avocado in a bowl until it is a smooth, mushy paste.

If you like, add a teaspoon of buttermilk to the mix to make it easier to spread. Smooth the paste onto your face or other discolored areas of your body and allow the mask to sit for 20 minutes before rinsing it off with cool water and a soft cloth.

All you need are cucumbers for your eyelids and some soft music and you’ll feel like you just spent 20 minutes relaxing in a high-end spa instead of your bathroom.

Vitamin E Oil Treatment

If your skin discolorations are due to old scarring from teenage acne, then vitamin E oil is one of the best treatments out there. Apply the oil directly to the discolored areas using the tips of your fingertips.

Be careful not to scratch your face with your nails. You can use this treatment every day to fade old scars and even out skin tone.

Protection is the Best Policy

If your skin discolorations come and go, you may simply have made your skin “mad.” Too much exposure to sunlight, wind, or even too many facial treatments that involve harsh chemicals can lead to uneven, irritated skin.

Start babying your face and your skin will stop being angry and go back to being “calm,” smooth, and glowing.

Protect yourself from the sun and other weather using a hat and lay off the chemical peels and treatments until your skin returns to normal.

Generally, you should not use any chemical treatments more than once every few weeks and you should avoid exfoliating more frequently than every two to three days to keep your skin calm and serene.
